Our time together will include time outside for breaks and also a half hour lunch. We will not be on the playground at the same time as our older students!
Science and Math
Using monthly themes, math and science concepts will be introduced and developed in a fun, hands-on, nurturing enviroment. We’ll share stories, use music, create, experiment and explore the world around us!
Some of the math skills incorporated are:
● Counting and Cardinality
● Classification and Patterning
● Scientific Inquiry- asking question and defining
problems. Scientific method.
● Moon cycles, planets
● life cycle of plants and lady bugs
● Rocks, rock collections
● Gravity, friction and magnetism. Force and motion
Reading & Writing
This part of our class will use the Phono-Graphix reading program which allows us to individualize the reading experience to the learner. Whether your child knows all of their letter symbol to sound relationships, or none at all!, this gentle program has been highly successful in teaching young children to not only learn to read, but also to love reading. Children are introduced to a significantly reduced alphabet while they start to memorize all of the symbol to sound relationships. Those children that already know their letter names, but not the letter sound, will gently start to re-associate a symbol to sound relationship that makes blending sounds easy. Dolch sight words (true sight words like "one" and "two") will also be introduced each week to allow children to build reading fluency. Through re-creating known stories and reading with one another in a book-rich environment, children will increase their reading comprehension skills. Re-telling stories with puppets and stuffed toys will be joy to reading and kids will especially look forward to this part of our day! We will also start beginning writing skills by developing small motor skills with clay, cutting out figures, working on mazes and other finger strengthing games. We'll do short sentences or copy work from our board along with lots of drawing and art work!
Science and Math
Using monthly themes, math and science concepts will be introduced and developed in a fun, hands-on, nurturing enviroment. We’ll share stories, use music, create, experiment and explore the world around us! Some of the math skills that will be incorporated into our math time will include Counting and Cardinality (first, second, third), Classification and Patterning ( our very most important math skill!), measurement and basic shapes. Math lessons will be reinforced in reading (what is the first sound you hear?), and throughout the day.
Science skills that will be incorporated into our hands-on science time together will include Scientific Inquiry; asking questions and defining problems. We'll practice the Scientific method for young minds! Our sciences will include Physical, Life and Earth Sciences so that children will be exposed to many different scientific ideas over our year together.
About Our Young Learners Teacher; Deb Baltau
While attending Keene State College in New Hampshire, majoring in Information Studies, still in the undergradute program, I moved back home to Sunny California! My husband and I met, married and began our family. A few years later I wanted to complete my education, but chose a different major, Early Childhood.
I Earned my Associate in Science Degree in Child Development from Moorpark College and completed certification for the State of California Child Development Permit, Teacher level. When my oldest was in Pre-Kindergarten, I began teaching in Early Childhood at a private school in Thousand Oaks. For 13 amazing years I taught, and took at least 9 units of CEU (Continuing Education Units) every year. The experience gained through those years has helped me develop my love and passion for teaching!
