HuckleBerry’s Young Learners program is a project based experience for early learners. We understand that children learn best by doing, by investigating, and by having the freedom and support to learn at the rate that is comfortable for them. At these ages, learning needs to be tactile, engaging, and highly differentiated. HuckleBerry has been using our small class hands-on approach to learning since 2007, and we are excited to expand our offering to our youngest learners!
In our program, children learn the social skills of sharing, patience, listening and respect for self and others. They learn to be kind to themselves and to others, which we think is one of the very most important aspects of education. We include academic and social learning in each class. Our child-centered environment integrates beginning reading, writing, math & science with music & movement, indoor and outdoor exploration, nature and art, development of fine and gross motor skills and character development.
Our schedule for Young Learners Math, Music & Science with our Stories, Reading & Writing is as follows
9:00 - 9:30 - early drop off - open play on our beautiful playground!
9:30 - 11:15 - Our Math, Music & Science Class!
11:15 - 11:45 - Lunch time and Play time!
11:45 - 1:15 - Our Stories, Reading & Writing Class!
1:15 - Pick Up
Stories, Reading & Writing!
Early Learners need a positive and engaging environment. Our Literacy program will use the PhonoGraphix program to teach our learners to read and to love reading! The program enables children to start at any level, from just learning letter recognition to forming complex words. Once children master the basic "code", they quickly become able to play with language and start to read and make up new stories! Our fun lessons will include choral reading, individual reading, story re-telling with felt boards and puppets along with beginning writing lessons designed to increase small motor skill development and reading comprehension. We'll read short stories that are tied to our reading lessons, and then enjoy longer stories at story time. Come to our literature rich environment where kids will learn to love to read!
Math, Music & Science (9:30 - 11:15 class)
Early Learners need a very tactile investigation of numeracy using different types of themes. Our class will practice counting and grouping to develop a concrete understanding of how numbers work. We will count apples in a tree, buttons in a box, dots on a paper - everything gets counted! A consistent question in this class will be "How Many?" Learners will work on mathematical concepts like bigger/smaller (groups), more/less and longer/shorter. Beginning addition & subtraction skills will be introduced by working on one more and one less while more experienced mathematicians will learn to regroup as they add. We'll also use song to help us remember learn all about numbers. Young brains can learn a lot when it is put to music!
Science is also really important at HuckleBerry, and this class will be no different! Our science lessons will be tied to our math lessons, so when "8" is our goal number in math, we'll count to 8, add with 8, group with 8, and then learn all about the Octopus! An Octopus has 8 tentacles, so we'll start with our octopus craft, learn about the Greek root word "Oct", learn how an octopus lives and camoflages itself, and then learn a very famous song all about an Octopus! Tactile learning, stories, short videos, crafts, and stories.... It all adds up to the type of lessons that enables kids to learn, and enjoy the process along the way!
I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus' garden in the shade
