The Store is OPEN! is a year-long course; we will be diving into the math fundamentals in the first quarter with an emphasis on consumer math throughout the year. The fundamentals covered this quarter will include: names, ordinal, and place values of numbers, counting, comparing and ordering, patterns and sequences, telling time, measurement, estimating, and measurement using the calendar, rulers, cylinders and more! Through the use of learning games, class projects, and interactive activities your child will better understand the basics that they are learning.
Our class will be doing such things as making their own calendars, practicing reading time on analog clocks, creating a measurement journal, and participating in the classroom store where they will practice buying and making change! Subtraction and regrouping is much more fun when the cash register is involved! I’ve also planned outdoor activities that will involve full body learning and the use of chalk; as well as fun indoor games like bingo and Old Maid-to practice double digit addition and subtraction, and then to move into regrouping, multiplication and division.
Parents can use any curriculum at home as this class will reinforce concepts generally found in the 1st – 3rd grade curriculum. I will be sending home worksheets to further reinforce learning and while I love to glimpse how each child is doing with math outside of the classroom, homework is not a requirement.
