High School Elective Credit: Communication
This class is a combination of fabulous books, discussion, history, and publishing! Normally students are asked to write essays about their reading, but in this class, we will be exploring a different communication tool; The Zine.
What’s a Zine? A zine is an independently or self-published booklet. Normally run in small batches, or in our case, potentially a batch of 1. Zines are frequently made by physically cutting and gluing text, images, charts, words, stickers and/or borders together onto a master layout. Sometimes they are photocopied, but for us, we’ll normally be making just one copy. Our first zine will be completely hand-made. Afterwards, we’ll explore publishing software and try out putting together our Zine ideas with more modern technology. We’ll use our creative juices to combine lots of different types of ideas, all centered on the concept of getting people to be interested in what we have to say – the ultimate form of communication.
Fun Fact: Zines have been around since 1776 when Thomas Paine self-published Common Sense; a perfect example to demonstrate the free spirit of zine culture.
Fall: - The Alchemist & Do Something That Matters
Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist became an international hit when it was released in 1988. It tells a short story of Santiago who goes searching for a “treasure” and learns many life lessons along the way. We will use The Alchemist to learn about following our passions, and what it takes to succeed in that journey.
"My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky." Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams."
We’ll learn about many people that have successfully followed their dreams and the varied paths they have taken to succeed.
Indira Gandhi, Theresa Kachindamoto, Nelson Mandela, Steve Jobs -
we have something to learn from each of these leaders and many more!
We’ll follow this up with a completely different type of book; Start Something That Matters by the founder of Tom’s Shoes, Blake Mycoskie. This book will help us learn about new ways to doing business, entrepreneurial trend setters and provide us with links to success stories, journeys, blogs, and a better understanding of what it takes to start something new that you are passionate about.
When we study success stories, we are inspired to fulfill our own dreams.
When we create Vision Boards, Posters and Zines,
we reinforce the ideas that we have learned into concrete symbols that can
remind us everyday to do what it takes to make our dreams a reality.
Our Zine will explore favorite biographies of peopel that have followed their passion and made a difference in the world, ideas from Coelho and Mycoskie, and a slew of other advocates of following our passion. This Zine will culminate in our authors exploring their own passions; who is doing what they want to do, how does it work, & success stories. One of the best pieces of advice we can give our young leaders is to find someone that is doing what you want to do, and do that they do. This Zine project will help them get on their way to doing exactly that.
Winter: The Obstacle Is The Way & Outliars. In the Winter session we will explore how Obstacles don't stand in our way; they pave our way. We'll learn about ancient and modern Stoics, their philosophy, and see if it will help us! Outliars is one of Malcolm Gladwell's best books about what contributes to making people become an outliar. We'll learn about several Outliars in history, and examine their lives, what influenced them, and what helped to make them amazing. Our Zine will reflect our learning.
Spring: Must Read Short Stories
