Winter Quarter: Lego WEDO Robotics
The LEGO® Education WeDo Construction Set is an easy-to-use set that introduces young students to robotics when combined with the LEGO Education WeDo Software v.1.2 and Activity Pack. Students will be able to build LEGO models featuring working motors and sensors; program their models; and explore a series of cross-curricular, theme-based activities while developing their skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics as well as language, literacy, and social studies. Kids will be building with more than 150 elements including a motor, tilt sensor, motion sensor, and LEGO USB Hub. Build a walking alligator, a soccer player that kicks a ball, a windmill and more!
Spring: Make your own Film!
Who doesn't want to make their own film? In this class kids will make a short animated film using Legos and their own newly created story! Storyboards, Legos, and iPods will allow them to get their creative juices going, and end up with a short film!
Fall Quarter: Create your own stories and games on iPads using Scratch!
This is one of our most interactive and collaborative classes for young learners! Kids in this age group are termed "Digital Natives" - they are basically raised in an age of electronics. While many of us limit the amount of electronic use our young children use for playing games, in this class kids are allowed to interact with an iPad to learn the art of telling their stories. Well before they have the fine motor skills and reading and writing skills to write their own story, they can learn the structure and the cycle of story-telling.
ScratchJr is an introductory programming language that enables young children to create their own interactive stories and games. Children learn to recognize different blocks of programming blocks of code that they can snap together to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing! After learning basic rules around the programming language, they can modify characters in the paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, even insert photos of themselves -- then use the programming blocks to make their characters come to life! Their own unique story is created! Being introduced to the ideas behind programming languages at an early age can interest many children into incorporating this essential skill into their education - something they can use anywhere!
