The Science of our Super Heroes!
Teacher: Jackie Solis
Cost: $230 or $210 if taking 2 or more classes per quarter. Can split into three equal payments.
Mat Fee: $30
It’s easy to forget that many of the superheros who have repeatedly saved the world are scientists: Spider-Man (Peter Parker) is an accomplished science student, the Incredible Hulk (Bruce Banner) is a nuclear physicist, Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards) holds doctorates in physics and electrical engineering. Most comic superheros have some strong link between science or technology. This course focuses on very real principles of science using the fictitious superpowers wielded by the likes of Spider-Man, Wonder Women, Batman and so many more!
This class introduces students to many scientific topics and principles, including magnetism, engineering and hydraulics, acoustics and the physics of sound waves, chemistry, genetics, visual perception, and arachnology. This action packed class is geared toward hands-on demonstrations and learning. Among them:
Superman is so strong because his home planet, Krypton, is much denser than Earth so the gravitational force is much stronger, meaning much stronger muscles are needed to perform everyday tasks. Why do you think that astronauts can make such huge steps on the moon? Find out what the gravity is like on other planets in our solar system. Would we be Super people on any of them?
The Spider-Man lesson explains that the tensile strength of spider’s silk is higher than any artificial material, and allows people to hang from hair-thin fibers, eight times stronger than steel. What other superpowers do spiders have?
Professor X, who trains his band of mutants to become crime-fighting X-Men, explores how mutations come about. Students are given three examples of living organisms, and then asked to guess the percentage of DNA that the three share. We will learn the basics of DNA and how it works and in this case, how it mutates to create an entire new organism!
We will learn all echolocation and acoustics when we study Daredevil, a blind superhero. How can we find something without our eyes? How do animals communicate through echolocation? Let's find out together!
