Shakespeare in the Movies
teacher: Lori Rivas
Mat Fees: $30
Combining the classic literature of Shakespeare, with modern cinematic interpretations, students will gain an understanding of four of Shakespeare's works: Hamlet; Tempest; Twelfth Night; and Romeo and Juliet. Working in 4-week cycles, class will:
first week: introduce the work, along with basic plot, significant characters, vocabulary and language, genre and historical context;
second week: students having read the play, we will discuss/outline plot;
third week: watch modern cinematic adaption (with thematic snacks!)
fourth week: discuss/compare original work to movie, including cultural references
Homework: students will be required to read the assigned works at home.
Class may run over the scheduled time, during the weeks that we watch the movies (1x/month).
Movies slated to watch are: The Bad Sleep Well; Forbidden Planet; She's the Man; and West Side Story.
