Real Chemistry for Kids
Teacher: Lynnette Bedard
Mat Fees: $25
Cost: $230; discounted to $210 if taking 2 or more classes. Can be split into 3 equal payments.
Students will explore the building blocks of matter (atoms) and how atoms interact (chemistry) to create the vast diversity of matter on earth. Students will create models based on evidence to represent objects and represent patterns in the natural world. They will plan and carry out investigations to produce data for evidence to answer questions and search for cause and effect relationships to explain natural events; further, to understand that human-made products are designed by applying some knowledge of the natural world and are built using materials derived from the natural world.
Activities will include investigating which substance (milk, isotope alcohol, or water) will best remove the outer coating of M&M’s, how to a conduct magic trick using sodium polacrylate - the substance in disposable diapers and extinguishing a fame by pouring an invisible gas on it. Students learn best by being totally engaged in lessons, mentally and physically, therefore many class activities will also include games and role-play, such as becoming an atom and searching for electrons to complete their outer shell to make a covalent bond.
