Stories are the most effective way to teach social emotional skills at an age when they are still forming values, and learning to establish self confidence. At this age stage, students ask themselves- “How can I be good?” - and need to feel capable and competent amidst diversity in their world. Establishing these skills at this age stage will contribute to lifelong well-being.

In this class we focus on developing our reading, comprehension, critical thinking and personal application skills with books that help children infer, contemplate and develop strong social emotional skills. We will include repetition and practice of a few vocabulary words to establish an experience of working hard to achieve their goals and establish competence.

Topics will likely include age appropriate books on self confidence, standing up for oneself and others, self-nurture responsibility, acts of kindness, overcoming big emotions, understanding emotions in others, overcoming anxieties, bullying, friendship diversity and much more. This class will offer the opportunity for reading aloud and discussion of these life-essential topics with their peers; providing the essential setting for developing a deeper understanding of individuality, diversity and empathy.

*This class can be taken consecutively each year. It does not repeat, as each year we will cover new books, topics, and vocabulary.
