What do Luke Skywalker, Buddha, Snow White, and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz all have in common? They each embark on a heroic journey, creating a story that teaches us about the human journey, with all it's struggles and triumphs -- also known as a myth.
Myth is often thought of as ancient lore, and fairly irrelevant to our modern world, when in fact the richness of diverse myths are interwoven into the very fabric of our world. Joseph Campbell, preeminent scholar of Myth tells us that the hero symbolizes our ability to transcend and conquer our ego, and that ultimately the journey of the hero is one that ends in the service to humanity.
In this class we will explore universal mythological themes throughout space and time -- from ancient India to Star Wars. These include the hero's quest as well as rites of passage and initiation. We will learn how to craft our own mythologies, and find striking similarities in mythological themes across cultures and continents.
To help us understand the power of myth, we will work on projects of our choosing, which might include writing an original story/story board using the elements of the Hero's Journey, as defined by Joseph Campbell.
