NY Times UPDate!
Teacher: Donna Connolly
Cost: $240 or $230 / quarter if taking 2 or more classes. Can be split into 3 equal payments.
Mat Fees: $30
Homework: Some reading from the magazine which will be given to each student.
This year long class will focus on current events from around the country and around the globe. The lesson plans will be based on the Scholastic NY Times Upfront Magazine available for every student in the class.
A typical day will include a read through of one of the many articles included in the magazine. Afterwards, we will discuss its current relevance and compare the events in the article with prior events in history and discuss their significance. For example, a story about students barred from using cell phones in school, may prompt a discussion about the history of democracy in the United States and our right to free speech provided in the First Amendment to the Constitution.
The last 30 minutes will be spent engaged in a variety of different activities like games, creative writing, art projects, and videos from Upfront On-line at Scholastic.com.
I’m very excited about the opportunity this class offers students to learn about national and international news stories, develop text-analysis skills, improve Social Studies proficiency and debate some of the most important issues facing our nation and the world.
