Neuroscience Studies - "The Inner Workings of the Brain"
Teacher: Lynnette Bedard
Material Fee: $30
Cost: $330 or $310 if taking 2 or more classes. Can be split into 3 equal payments
This TWO HOUR class is designed to cover 2 trimesters (20 weeks)
The smell of a flower or sweating feet, the memory of a walking on the beach or the pain of stepping on a sharp shell - these experiences are made possible by the 3 lbs of tissue in our heads...the BRAIN. Discover the exciting world of the brain, spinal cord, neurons, and senses while engaging in experiments, activities, and games. Students will examine and understand the physical and cognitive processes that make us human and each one of us unique.
Because understanding occurs more deeply when uncovering facts through investigation and because individuals in this age group are very social, most lessons will use methods to facilitate this type of learning. For example, as a class, students will conduct an experiment on how exercise effects learning, then forming small groups or pairs engage in small group discussion about relevant research findings (different groups look at different data) and perform their own personal research. Then, groups will present their findings to the class as either a poster or informational brochure that could be used to present the findings to the Huck community. Another activity will investigate multi-tasking. Students will discuss mult-tasking in small groups and create a list of common multi-tasking scenarios, which they will then share with the whole class. After some class discussion to determine validity of scenarios, each group will design and conduct an experiment to determine if multi-tasking is an efficient method of completing the tasks in their scenario. Then, present their findings to the class.
High School Credit may be available if additional reading and written work is conducted at home. This will be addressed on an individual basis.
