Why study Mythology? Ancient stories have been used for ages to explain the world around us and make sense of the our place in it. In this class, we'll learn how mythology has been used to describe human character, and how ancient myths permeate our modern culture. From cultural references to cars, shoes and constellations, we'll learn about the Power of Myth. We'll compare and contrast creation stories from ancient civilizations. We'll study Egyptian, Greek and Roman myths in addition to less well known myths from the Norse, Native American, Chinese, Hindu and other cultures.
We'll use the myths we learn about to understand more fully Joseph Campbell's Heroes Journey, from taking an adventure, making new friends, encountering obstacles and roadblocks (both internal and external), and finally becoming a better person more able to make difficult but moral choices, and then returning home a changed person We'll trace each part of this cycle in one of most famous myths, Homer's The Iliad. In this way, Mythology becomes more than something from our Ancient World. It becomes a way to integrate story into how we determine the choices we make every day. Mythology is an integral part of how we think about ourselves and our world. In this class, we will consistently make the connection between the stories of the ancient world and how they relate to today's world.
This class will incorporate Creative Writing when we create our own Myth that explains something in our Modern World. Our myth will include all of the components of a good Heroes Journey! We'll also write opinion pieces, comparative essays and more!
We'll use D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths as we study the Greek gods which will help us learn more about Greek history & culture, and will be used as inspiration for our art projects. History Pockets will also be used to dive deeper in the history behind the myth. Join us in our Adventure Through Mythology!
