Join us on this fabulous journey around the world as we look at the famous myths that help us to understand different cultures! Each day we will spend story time reading about a myth from around the world, and then we will be drawing, building, reenacting a play, painting or other activities to help us understand and remember our myth and its message! We’ll start with Polynesia – where the popular Disney movie Moana is centered and learn about the Legends of Maui! Maui pulled New Zealand from the bottom of the sea! Since this is my native land, I’ll be able to really help kids understand this powerful myth as we learn to make Pois, learn an ancient Maori dance and song! We’ll learn about other exploits of Maui and then move on to Africa and learn about Anansi! We’ll learn about creation myths & fire myths from all over the world and see what they were so important to early cultures. We’ll learn how weather affected ancient myths from the Greeks to the Native Americans and then do our own rain dance! We’ll make our own piece of art using fallen leaves and twigs to illustrate one of our Native American stories. We’ll also learn about favorite mythical monsters! The kids will make their own mythical monster and we will see what monster in mythology most resembles it. We’ll read the story of Odysseus and compare our monsters and their abilities and uses! Every good monster also deserves a hero! Read about St George and the Dragon and Perseus and Medusa. Everyone will get to make a shield their own shield to help them fight these monsters of old!
