Spring: Understanding World Religions & Cultures
By the end of this class the student will have a well rounded understanding of choosing their thoughts and using their voice confidently with the ability to understand diversity and empathize with others. The objective of this course is to cultivate a balanced, empathetic understanding of the total human experience; celebrating the beauty of self, confidence, empathy and diversity.
The first half of the year will focus on understanding our thoughts, developing confidence to speak our voice in order to be heard by others. Students will explore effective communication tools, big emotions and learn what happens in the brain when they are triggered. They will practice speaking their voice, taking control of emotional reactions and the art of empathy. The second half of this class will focus on developing a perspective of the major world religions, their similarities, differences and influence on the cultures of today. Each week the students will discuss, explore and engage in an activity for the major principles of a world religion. When we study Buddhism we will make a mandala to understand the idea on impermanence that is so central to Buddhism. In each religion, we'll have fun discovering new ideas from around the world!
