Musical Theatre Appreciation and Analysis CLUB!
If you love nerding out about musical theatre, then this is the club for you!
In this club, we’ll discuss and analyze musicals for their functionality, emotional impact, creativity, development, and much more. We’ll look at the music, story, characters, dialogue, themes and motifs, costume design, scenic design, etc. as we analyze these shows. We may also do some scene study and take turns directing.
This club will begin by setting some ground rules for what we look for in musicals and how to identify the features of an effective musical. Once we’ve had these preliminary discussions, we’ll apply the conclusions to which we come in order to dissect various musicals.
Although it is preferable that you have some pre-existing knowledge of musical theatre, it is by no means essential. Students should expect some light outside work, usually listening to the music from the show to be discussed the following week.
Please be aware that some of the content in these musicals is meant for teens.
The musicals we’re hoping to cover in the Fall trimester are:
The Sound of Music
West Side Story
The Phantom of the Opera
Love Never Dies
Into the Woods
Jesus Christ Superstar
Singing in the Rain
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella
