Model United Nations is an academic event that has existed since the 1920’s when it was called Model League of Nations. For generations, students from High School and all the way to the highest levels of college have participated in hundreds of circuits of Model United Nations. MUN members simulate the United Nations by assuming the roles of diplomats and attending conferences/competitions. At these conferences, students debate global issues, conduct speeches, draft resolutions, form political alliances, and resolve critical international problems This program focusses on a vast amount of skills such as diplomacy, creativeness, public speaking, speech writing, argumentation, succinct writing, geography, and most of all respect of fellow delegates. Students will go to at least 2 conferences representing their assigned nations, and they will be able to discuss and propose solutions to some of the most important issues the real UN faces today. Climate change, Nuclear de-proliferation, and women’s rights are just a few of hundreds of possible topics that will be brought up in conferences. This program is one of the most interesting hands-on way that a student can be exposed and aware of difficult topics that our world faces.
Model UN presents students with an exceptional opportunity to sharpen their skills as debaters, public speakers, and researchers while expanding their knowledge of international politics.
For those students that feel that Debate is not their cup of tea, please know that we start at the NOVICE level. You participate at the level where you are comfortable. Perhaps you will prefer to do more research and less debate - that works! Many debate teams have participants that are significantly more comfortable with different aspects of Model UN.
Paricipating in Model UN ensures that you know not just the standard information that every high schooler is exposed to. Model UN expands your awareness of WORLD ISSUES and many times it is the way that students start to make connections between what they learned in history (or not!), and what is going on today. We learn how other countries are organized and make decisions, we learn how and why the Security Council that we all depend upon for World Peace struggles to make headway, and most importantly, we start to see solutions to problems that we all face. As citizens of one of the world's most important countries, we need to be able to see how our actions can help other nations start to achieve the type of peace that we have achieved. Model UN is one way that we can start to develop those skills.
Preceeding the Model UN class, we will take a half hour to look at major world issues that are debated within the Model UN so that we have time to learn more, discuss more, and work on our research skills.
