Love Math? Then you’ll love putting it to use in these fun realistic projects utilizing core skills gained in 5th7th grades. Hate Math? You’ll get way more use out of math from these projects than doing a worksheet! In this class, we will have a lesson on a particular math skill, and then we’ll put it to use in our project. Each of these projects is leveled, so students can attack the math at the level that is most comfortable. If they don’t do double digit multiplication so well, we’ll pick some easy numbers so that they gain practice. Multiplication is no sweat? Then let’s add some decimals into the equation. Everyone benefits from projects that will stretch our math minds, and help us understand how relevant math can be!
Some of our projects this quarter will include:

We spent our last project exploring the coordinate plane, so we're all ready to learn about negative numbers. We'll start with using algebra tiles to show how positive and negative numbers relate to each other. Addition and Subtractio of negative numbers is our real challenge and the tiles will help everyone with this difficult but important skill. Then we'll move to our home grown project Too Many Lattes. We'll take a look at Stephanie's ficticious bank account when she has made a few too many latte runs. What does it mean to have a negative number in your bank account? We'll delve into negative integer operations as we order one too many lattes.

Calling All Cell Phones. In this project we’ll be comparing cell phone plans and come up with the best plan for our family! Multiplication, division and ratios rule the day when we compare cell phone plans!

How polluted in Santa Clarita? Oh No! We’ll be looking at our air quality and our water quality and using ratios, addition, multiplication, and fractions to see how healthy we are!In this project, we will also be writing up and publishing our results!

What difference does a grade make? Let’s find out! Even though we don’t believe in grades at Huck, we still want to know how they work! In this project we’ll have to practice addition and multiplication, and learn some prealgebra skills as we figure out what’s the WORST we can do to still pull an A in a class where we haven’t exactly been getting all A’s.We’ll also be learning about GPA’s and how to wreck them…

Is Dominoes really such a good deal?Let’s find out as we take the Dominoes challenge. We’ll figure out the marketing strategy and the hidden charges of ordering pizza
