This is a yearlong project based math concepts class that includes hands-on activities that help students visualize key ideas and practice key skills. The projects in this session will be both group and individual. This class also relies strongly on the use of games, word problems, and real-world application to help promote interest and understanding.
Fall: We'll start with remembering all of our multiplication facts and practice these with dice games, bingo and more! Then we’ll dive into fractions, building from a foundation of adding and subtracting with "like" denominators as well as multiplication of fractions and whole numbers. Learning the concept of the number 1 as a fraction will enable us to change all of our fractions around to find equivalents and determine bigger/smaller understandings. Factors and Multiples will become our friends as we use them over and over with all of our fraction games!
Winter: We’ll develop more fully our understanding of parts-of-a-whole with an exploration of decimals, including the operations of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Our projects will include planning meals, budgeting and more real-life opportunities to see how decimals are part of our everyday life!
Spring: we’ll move into the realm of geometry with studies in perimeter, area, and volume.
