Prereqs; Must understand multiplication and division of whole numbers and be able to complete these operations. Students do not need to have their multiplication tables mastered, but that will help. This class will not be teaching the concept of multiplication or division; students must already understand that.
The two most important skills for students to master in their pre-algebra work is fractions and negative integer operations. Holes in these two concepts are where the majority of the difficulty arises when students move into algebra and beyond, so it is essential that these skills are mastered! In this class, we will focus on mastering fractions!
Using a combination of manipulatives, board work, collaborative group work, games & projects, students will master the concept of fractions! In each class, kids will be given a group lesson and will work collaboratively on fraction work that comes home to show the work they were doing in the class. They will do individual board work, play reinforcing games or work on reinforcing projects. Some of our activities will include completing The Sieve of Eratosthenes to know primes to 100, playing Bigger /Smaller to learn how to determine if fractions are bigger or smaller than other fractions, Prime Spoons, Matching games and more! Kids will master basic & intermediate fraction operations, learning about factors and multiples and determining the LCM of fraction denominators, addition, subtraction and multiplication of fractions, mixed fractions and improper fractions, learn to convert fractions, simplify fractions, recognize equivalent fractions, and more! Come to this class to Master Fractions!
