Winter quarter; Squid, Octopus, Sharks, Skates & Rays!
Students will get to dissect their own squid, hold a 6 foot Octopus, see what is inside a clam shell and feel what it's like to stick their hand in a jellyfish!! These are just a few of the cool things we will explore in Marine Biology. We will begin with squids where we will learn to identify major external and internal organs. We'll learn the differences between octopus and squid, before we move on to the ʺperfectʺ predator -‐ sharks! We'll learn that all sharks are fish, but nor all fish are sharks! We will discover how many senses a shark has and how they use them to catch their prey. Students will perform experiments to see how their own senses match up to sharks! We will hold a real shark and learn how its anatomy assists in their hunting ability. We will watch short National Geographic movies that bring the oceans creatures to life! Of course we will see, hold and touch several marine animals during our marine exploration. We'll finish this exploration with learning the differences between sharks, rays and skates!
