Teacher:  Stephanie Berry

Ages:  11-14

Class Fee:  $240 or $230 if taking 2 or more classes

Mat Fee:  $25 - includes all books / stories

In this class we will read great novellas and short stories at home and discuss them in class.   With each story, we will uncover different themes that we can then explain in our writing.   Students will be able to choose from particular writing prompts discussed in class, or they may explore new themes.   Students will all be writing at their own level, from short beginning essays to more robust analytical essays.    We will use our writing to organize and explain our ideas.   Some writers will use a thesis statement provided in class and practice proving the thesis by providing strong topic sentences for each of their explanatory paragraphs.   Other more experienced writers will create their own thesis statements, introductions and more.   We will review sample outlines for essays to learn how to make structural decision, and work each week to strengthen our writing and our grammar.    While all students will be writing each week, we will peer review only 1-2 papers each week so that we have plenty of time for discussion.   Grammar lessons will be incorporated based on student needs.

Our reading selections will include "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury, "A&P" by John Updike and more!
