Would you survive, if: your ship was sinking, you were attacked by a shark, or caught in a hurricane? Read books (or have them read to you) from the Scholastic “I Survived…” historical fiction series, facing terrifying catastrophes based on natural disasters/encounters. (Possible Books-depending on time The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912, The Shark Attacks of 1916, The Hindenburg Disaster, 1937, The Eruption of Mt. St Helen, 1980, Hurricane Katrina, 2005, The Japanese Tsunami, 2011). We will learn about physical, life, and earth sciences (weather, geology, ecology, physical geography, animal biology, physics, the water cycle, and natural processes), their effects on geography and people, and strategies used to survive extreme situations. Students will run experiments to understand natural processes, and create projects and games that incorporate the history, geography, and science concepts encountered in the books.
For each book we will learn the science behind the disastor and engage in discussions, games, experiments, projects & presentations that tie in with the history, geography, and science concepts in the books.
Students will also learn basic survival skills, such as first aid and CPR!
