Year Long Class
Introduction to the field of Psychology, covering several domains including: scientific inquiry, human development, sociocultural issues and motivation/emotion/personality. We will emphasize topics relevant to the period of adolescence, including Erikson’s developmental stage of identity formation, individual variations in personality, multiculturalism, and social influence. We will take personality tests to see if they resonate with us, design psychology experiments, and connect what we’re learning to our experiences. We will watch short videos and documentaries about famous psychology experiments and studies of psychological phenomenon.
Beyond the traditional domains of psychology, we will discuss the new wave of positive psychology and mindfulness, integrating practical and experiential components. We will discuss states of consciousness and social influence, explore the modern theory of epigenetics (nature plus nurture), and uncover our brain’s tendency to stereotype (and how to move beyond it). This class will have 2-3 hours of homework per week, including a term paper or presentation to demonstrate mastery of the material. All three quarters are required for credit.
Fall: Experiment Design, Human Development, Personality, States of consciousness
Winter: Motivation & Emotion, Health, Stress and Coping, Social Thinking and Social Influence, Prosocial/Anti-social Behavior (i.e. "Why can't we all just get along?")
