Hebrew was the language of the Ancient Israelites. It has played a central role in the cultural history of the Jewish people for the past three thousand years and has made an important impact on Western culture. By 200 AD use of Hebrew as an everyday language had largely ceased, but it continued to be used for literary and religious purposes. During the mid-19th century, the first efforts were made to revive Hebrew as an everyday language. During its long history, Hebrew has undergone diverse changes and has developed several different layers, from biblical Hebrew to modern day Hebrew. Today Hebrew is spoken by some 5 million people, mainly in Israel, where it is an official language.
In this class we will learn how to read and write Hebrew and learn some basic Hebrew grammar and vocabulary. We will also learn about geography, Jewish history/culture and fascinating archaeological discoveries made in the land of Israel! Join us on a fascinating journey into one of the oldest languages and cultures in the world!! We will participate in activities like Hebrew jeopardy, design our own game board, learn about Jewish holidays, partake in a feast to celebrate the New Year of the Trees & recite Hebrew poems.
