Ages 10-14

Mat Fees:  $25

Class Fees:  $240 or $230 if taking 2 or more classes

This trimester we will continue to focus on proper use of grammar and using proper capitalization and punctuation.  We will reinforce our use of periods, commas, question marks, exclamation points, apostrophes, and quotation marks. Students have been proofreading with greater ease, and we will continue to work with expanding these skills. We will further our work identifying parts of speech with students recognizing subjects and predicates, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, articles, prepositions and conjunctions.  We will learn about clauses, phrases, and simple and compound sentences.   Students will work on developing research skills, by practicing note taking, and outlining.  They will produce a report of a chosen topic to share with the class.   We will also enjoy learning more about the origin and construction of many of our commonly used words!

We had a terrific first trimester learning about many of the rules, regulations, and conventions for our English language.  In our second trimester we will continue to expand upon the learning and directives that we covered, and continue to practice using these tools.  With more advanced practice, we will sharpen our skills!  Emphasis will be on correct usage, refined proofreading, and further developing our literacy.  Students will spend more time with word analysis, correct use of tenses, and structured writing.  Building upon the rules and conventions presented in our earlier class, we will tackle more difficult challenges, and continue to build our super powers as advanced, proficient, grammar detectives!  Students will be able to find and correct problems in samples given, and increase proficiency in detecting their own errors.  My intent is to make the mechanics of writing properly a happy challenge with satisfying rewards!

Can our students rise to the challenge? Besides creating the aura of becoming sleuths, searching and seeking violations in the use of our beloved English language, this session will address nitty gritty, bare bones, basic language skills.  In this class, we will concentrate our efforts on mastering essential writing tools of the English language.  We will work on basics such as proper sentence construction, and conventional rules of grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Basics! We will cover terms such as subject, predicate, capitalization, punctuation, kinds of sentences, and verb tenses.  We will learn about the parts of speech, and when and how to use them.  (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, prepositions, conjunctions) We will spend time with those tricky contractions such as your/you’re/there/their/they’re). We will even visit the to, two, too challenge! We will enjoy word analysis and expand our vocabulary by recognizing and using common, and not so common, prefixes and suffixes with an eye on root words, their derivations, and structure.  With emphasis on proofreading, editing, and drills, we will tackle the basics, and be victorious over the challenges we face in our written work!  Hopefully, by the end of this session, each student will write carefully crafted, beautifully written, expertly proofread, masterful paragraphs!  These detectives will acquire badges, certificates and prizes as they progress through games and challenges designed to make their learning fun!
