Following Narnia: The Lion’s Song:
Where History and Fiction Meet
Teacher: Sharon Ashford
Cost: $240 or $230 if taking more than 1 class, can be split into 3 equal payments
Materials Fees: $35
Homework: Reading & Writing Each Week
This fun and exciting course uses the first three novels of The Chronicles of Narnia ( The Magician's Nephew, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and The Horse and His Boy). Students will receive writing lessons from the enchanted world of Narnia using The Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) methodology. In addition to their writing assignments, students will participate in fun, learning-based activities from the Narnia chapters. Students will participate in storytelling games, illustrate, make shadow boxes, participate in readers theater, give speeches, and more!
Students will also write non-fiction topics from history and science. Historical topics include the architecture of Buckingham Palace, Winston Churchill, Theodore Roosevelt, London Air Raids, Hitler, and C.S. Lewis. Studying the writing style of C.S. Lewis, students will analyze words he selected and then use the words in their own Narnia stories to build vocabulary usage. (Remember learning vocabulary words and then putting them into a sentence to show understanding)?
Students will need access to all three books as chapter readings are assigned from the books and writing lessons are based on the chapter readings. The class fees will be used to provide a student text Following Narnia: The Lion’s Song from IEW. Grammar and style are taught within the context of writing and there will be grammar warm-ups at the beginning of each class. I believe in giving incentives of authentic praise and small rewards to students when they give their personal best, which looks different for each student.
