Early Childhood Music & Movement

Erin Cuiltner

Ages 4-7

In this class we will learn about music through singing, playing games, playing simple instruments, reading books, and creating art projects! We will be learning to sing on pitch using our head voices, learning to read music and training our ears. Concepts will be based on the Kodaly method of teaching music. This class is designed so that students can take it for up to three years without repeating material. Both new and returning students are welcome.

We will be using scarves and ribbons to move to music in two different ways-- using both steady beat motions and expressive (non-beat) motion.  We will be playing metal instruments (glockenspiels and jingle bells), wooden instruments (rhythm sticks), shaking instruments (shakers), and scraping instruments (pool noodle "sand" blocks). We will be composing our own rhythms.  We will also be accompanying ourselves as we sing by playing our instruments (especially the glockenspiel).

In the fall our classes will be structured around the themes of friendship, pumpkins/harvest, thankfulness, and bears.  Each week we will be creating an art project and reading a book that ties in with either one of our musical concepts, our theme, or both.  Books will include "Mortimer" and "Up, Up , Down" by Robert Munsch, "Good Night Owl" by Pat Hutchins, and more!

Our art projects will help us explore our theme and/or our musical concepts in new ways. Art projects will vary depending on whether we are online or in the classroom, but will include activities like making paper bag bear puppets, "Going on a Bear Hunt" treasure maps, and tissue paper pumpkin sun catchers.

If we are online, the format of this class will change as follows:

This class will include a kit of home materials, when class is online.  We will meet in a live online zoom format.  The kits will include all necessary props, instruments and craft supplies.  We will use a format very much like our in class format when meeting online-- singing, playing instruments, moving to music, reading, and making craft projects together.  Students will need their materials kits during each class meeting. When class is online, we will meet for 75 minutes in Zoom each week, and then have additional at home practice activities available on the app Seesaw for use between classes.
