Winter & Spring: Cooking Around the World
For the Winter and Spring trimesters, we will switch to an international food experience and cook our way around different parts of the world! In the Winter trimester, we will travel to Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe. We will make sushi hand rolls from Japan, chicken shawarma from Israel, Pasta with Pancetta from Italy, Chicken Tikka Masala from India, and more! For the Spring trimester, we will visit parts of North and South America, as well as parts of Europe. On the menu will be poutine from Canada, peach cobbler from the Southern United States, trifle from the United Kingdom, lomo saltado from Peru, and much more!
Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable in a kitchen setting, and have a little experience chopping and cooking. If a student is not comfortable in either of these areas, they will be given other jobs to ensure safety. Particular attention must be paid when instruction is given on safety. We will be working with knives, and also with fire and hot surfaces, so students need to agree to follow all instructions and be compliant during this class. Any horseplay or fooling around will not be tolerated, because someone could get injured as a result of carelessness. But please know we will have tons of fun! I just need to make sure your kiddos are safe!
Danielle Hewitt worked as a chef and caterer for over 20 years. She catered lots of parties, weddings, holiday events, etc. for the rich and famous, worked on the sets of movies, tv shows, and commercials, worked in the homes of tv, music, and movie stars, and catered events all over Southern California. She has had her own catering business and dessert companies, and worked as a chef in three So. Cal. restaurants. Her work took her to Hollywood studio sets, huge celebrity mansions, awards shows, and crazy filming locations. She has met lots of interesting and fun people (famous and not-so-famous). There were only three times she got starstruck…ask her some time and she’ll tell you the stories! As a bonus, she’ll tell you the three nicest famous people she ever cooked for!
