Thursdays 3-4:30pm
Homework: YES! Homework is required in this class. Please do not sign up if
you are unwilling to do the homework which will allow us to play our game each
week!
Join us as we apply creative story writing, character exploration and story telling through
the vehicle of fantasy building tabletop role-playing! Join our EPIC adventure where we
work to cultivate our abilities to weave our ideas into engaging stories that everyone can
participate in!
This session we will us the legendary fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, which
was created in 1974, and has millions of players worldwide! However, in our class unlike
the online version of the game, the story and characters will be limited in scope. Our
emphasis will be on The Heroes Journey, where a hero will emerge from a journey of trials
and tribulations and temptations, forcing our heroes to question themselves beofre
ultimately becoming a better version of self. To do this, anti-heroes will also be present,
ultimately helping our heroes re-define themselves.
To play a Role Playing Game (RPG) players step into the boots of mighty heroes (and sneaky
antiheroes) to create their very own stories. Cy has created a class to help students learn
to develop their characters more deeply, develop more complex story lines, and have an
audience to try out their stories and conflicts! Each student will create their very own
character which will then embark upon a made-up adventure. Cy will be serving as the
game’s referee and storyteller. He will create new and more complex problems to resolve
and will also help keep the content of the game appropriate. Students will work as a group
and do a weekly character writing journal and take turns updating the weekly story summary
journal. Players use their imaginations as they embark on an adventure story from Cy's
mind. Through character building, improvisation, team work, basic math, problem solving
and pure random luck players will role dice and create their very own fantasy story with one
another. Students will be learning logic and problem solving; this will be a creative
adventure for all!
Please note: In the Huck usage of this game, we will not be allowing dark content.
