Writing is really ORGANIZED THINKING! This class will teach students how to develop, focus and organize their ideas into strong writing. We will begin by reviewing the purpose of the paragraph as a single, coherent and developed unit of thought. Students will practice writing strong topic sentences and supporting their ideas with details. Our writing projects will include descriptive, expository and argumentative projects that allow students to explore and expand their ideas.
Throughout the semester, students will practice revision skills as they prepare and complete a special “Writing Project Portfolio” containing their polished paragraphs and essays. The workshop structure of this course will provide students with an audience to make their writing more meaningful. They’ll receive feedback from each other, as well as from the teachers, in class and learn revision techniques to help improve their writing skills. Students present their writing orally in class so that they can learn about the reactions their writing elicits from others and receive helpful feedback to aid with the revision process. These workshops not only allow students an important opportunity for feedback, but allow them to be immersed in the writing of their peers as well. This requires each student to sharpen his or her own analytical skills as they consider how others may improve their essays. Over the course of the semester each student will complete several writing assignments and critique many more in class – a process that will improve their writing by leaps and bounds.
Students will definitely do a lot of writing in this course, but writing only improves with regular practice! Everyone will need access to a word processing program. All homework assignments will be typed to help encourage the revision process. There will be weekly homework assignments in addition to our in class work, so that students will have lots of opportunities to hone their skills.
This course is offered at a discount and will be taught primarily by Charlotte Van Houten, who will be supervised and mentored by Holly Van Houten. Together they will prepare lesson plans and materials that respond to the week by week needs of the students. Both Charlotte & Holly will be in the class at all times, and students will greatly benefit from having two accomplished writers as their guides!
