Build A Town - Continuing Class, but newcomers are welcome!
teacher: Deb Baltau
Cost: $215 or $195 if taking 2 or more classes!
Mat Fees: $30
In this Spring session we will be growing our town, creating a nature sanctuary, looking into how to meet the needs and wants of a growing community, creating a flag, and discussing urban, suburban and rural areas. We will need to make some laws and rules to apply to our town, as well as come up with some products that our town can produce. To wrap it up, we will read about some leaders, and reflect on what qualities make a good leader. While learning about historical events, we will create our own town, government, and economy!
In this project based class, we will be building our very own town from scratch to help us learn about geography, weather, seasons, plants and animals, and of course, each other! We will interact with all of these ideas by “settling” a town, and then building it up by choosing different resources, creating rules (laws) and customs, setting up our own government by learning about democracy, creating a flag and so much more! We will learn about economics through the use of our own resources, we will learn about our government through setting one up for our town. We will start by building a large land map with many different land forms so that we can learn basic geographical vocabulary; mountain, hill, peninsula, plains and more! Our settlers will identify their needs and wants from the resources that are available in their newly settled land, and they will learn to respect the earth by designing and creating a nature preserve. Mini learning units include map skills (learning the directions and how to read a map), landforms, weather & seasons and how they affect food growth and living conditions, bridge building as a way to move goods around, customs, goods and services, creating a flag and other symbols, and more! Students will be writing in their own journal as we learn more about our town and our world, and as they modernize their town they will learn new concepts like “rural”, “suburban” and what types of activities normally go into each environment. They place businesses into their town, and then learn how to manage their new resources and take care of their land. Come join us as we build a town!
This Multi-Disciplinary Class includes:
- Math; graphing, counting, perimeter as we figure out where we will farm, basic math as we plan our crops to feed ourselves and so much more!
- Language Arts; writing about our graphs, describing our laws, creating leadership lists and more! Vocabulary is developed as we discuss geographic land forms and write about our crops, nature reserve, animals.
- Science is integrated into the class as we learn about the seasons, what plants need to grow, how to keep our town eco-friendly and animal friendly!
- Leadership is developed as we work together as a team to develop our laws and rules, how we learn to come to a consensus on the types of businesses we will allow into our town, what our flag will symbolize and many other discussions as we Build Our Town!
