This two-semester class will focus on the principles of biology at the HIGH SCHOOL level and will include labs!
We will begin at the beginning - the Structure of All Matter! We will create atomic models and participate in an electron survival game, sharing and creating bonds to survive. Does heat affect your ability to “taste” sweets? Does stress affect body temperature? Does eye color affect sight? Find out in our fabulous lab activities! We will also learn about Cell Theory and the Chemistry of Living systems where we will look at our own cells under microscopes, compare and contrast plant and animal and make a short movie about A Day in the Life of a Cell. On to genetics where we will examine Mitosis and Meiosis, have a genetic scavenger hunt and then create a new breed of dog by using random DNA codes! Finally we will study adaptation where we will participate in a Battle of the Beaks, where we will determine which food (rubber band worms, marble bugs or toothpick crickets) to eat with a “beak” (chop stick, tiny spoon, or fork) - demonstrating how bird beaks have adapted to eat food in their own biome.
Second Semester will include all new topics!
Throughout the course, students will practice asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations, including testing hypothesizes, evaluating data, and interpreting graphs. Additionally, students will practice writing and presenting material using scientific vocabulary and language at the Middle School level.
Homework: A free, on-line textbook through the CK12 Foundation and on-line videos will be used. Students should expect some reading or video watching homework so they are fully prepared for class each week. Parent and student interaction with the class website will be an important part of the learning process therefore instructions and assistance will be provided to assure everyone can use the website.
