The Law of Conservation states that all matter moves in cycles...it is neither created or destroyed. Atoms in existence today are the same atoms that existed long ago. A carbon element in the air you breath today could have been buried as coal for 65 million years before being burned in a power plan. Then, after approximately 20 years in the Earth’s atmosphere it was dissolved in the ocean and then taken up by an algae cell and consumed by plankton before being respired and again entering Earth’s atmosphere. The atoms in the air you just breathed while reading this, may contain the same atoms that Plato exhaled thousands of years ago.
In the second semester, we will build on the knowledge gained last semester to research and develop suggestions on how to assure the continuance of vital cycles on earth, as well as, how the Earth fits into larger cycles such as the solar system. By researching and understanding the delicate balance within nature, students will find their role in the maintaining the balance. End of semester projects will include analyzing an endangered cycle and suggesting remedies for its repair.
