Cut, Sew, Create! - Beginning Sewing Projects
Teacher: Carla Moran
Cost: $230 - this is an 11 week class
Mat Fees: $35 (teacher will be bringing many sewing supplies, but students will be expected to purchase material needed for projects on their own)
Homework: you will take home projects to continue throughout the week as well as bring in items needed for the class projects (i.e. magazines, pencils, eraser, t-shirt)
Learn to pattern, cut and sew your very own collection in this sewing class for beginners! You will learn to hand sew as well as use the sewing machine, using shared sewing machines brought to class or your own! This class will include Trend Research, Patternmaking, and Textile Design (such as shibori, screen printing, discharge). You will create your own Mood Board to show what inspired you for this collection (colors, themes, textures, pictures, etc.). Bring your creativity and love for fun. Please be respectful of fellow Artists in this class. You may be asked to collaborate or facilitate with other projects when appropriate. Respect for your work space is important and you will stay organized as well as clean up after yourself to prepare for the incoming class.
We will start our class by learning about tools, project overview, trend research techniques, creating mood boards and Pinterest with parent approval and supervision. Students will bring in magazine pictures and other sources of inspiration to create a personalized Mood Board which will pave the way for their collection. It will help them to stay organized as they get creative throughout the upcoming weeks. I will provide a Classroom Stash of trims, embellishments, etc. for use for your collection.
Students will also learn Textile Design Techniques and learn about the color wheel and color theory before they start their sewing. They will learn to sketch their creations and pick out materials from the Classroom Stash to design their own collection! Once this is done, students will present their boards, and then the sewing begins!
Our first project will be to upcycle a pair of socks into a Sock Doll (hand sewing). Students will learn to pattern, cut, sew, attach eyes and embroider mouth and nose details!
FIELD TRIP (OPTIONAL): We will meet at Joann's in Simi Valley on Saturday to shop fabrics and thread for upcoming projects. Details will be discussed in class and a handout for parents will be provided.
Next we will learn to design and sew a pillow case, a throw blanket, a macrame Key Fob, Bracelet or Headphone Cord and more! At the end of the class, students will bring their entire collection including their mood boards and present their collection!
Students will need to bring the following materials to class:
Sewing tote or backpack
Pencils, Markers and/or other writing utensils of choice
Sketchbook of choice (lined paper is fine)
Double sided tape (optional)
Portable Sewing Machine (if possible)
