Calling All Fashionistas and Artists!
Learn to pattern, cut and sew your very own collection in this sewing class for beginning and intermediate sewers. You will make a clutch or travel bag as well as add really cool finishing details to your work. This class will include Trend Research, Patternmaking, and Textile Design (such as shibori, screen printing, discharge). You will create your own Mood Board to show what inspired you for this collection (colors, themes, textures, pictures, etc.). Bring your creativity and love for fun. Please be respectful of fellow Artists in this class. You may be asked to collaborate or facilitate with other projects when appropriate. Respect for your work space is important and you will stay organized as well as clean up after yourself to prepare for the incoming class.
BRING MAGAZINES, PICTURES, AND ANY OTHER SOURCES OF INSPIRATION FOR YOUR COLLECTION! We will cover introduction to tools, project overview, trend research techniques, creating mood boards and Pinterest with parent approval and supervision. Your Mood Board will pave the way for your collection. It will help you stay organized as you get creative throughout the upcoming weeks. I will provide a Classroom Stash of trims, embellishments, etc. for you to use for your collection. We will be learning Textile Design Techniques and learn about the color wheel and color theory as you start designing your collection. You may use these for your mood board and/or projects as you see fit. Everyone will present their mood board before they start their collection!
For your first project you will upcycle a white accessory item. Get your creativity warmed up and flowing with a technique of choice: hand painting, or drawing with markers. Choices are converting white sneakers, white top or bottoms, or creating a one of a kind scarf from upcycled white t-shirt
FIELD TRIP (OPTIONAL): We will meet at Joann's in Simi Valley on Saturday to shop fabrics and thread for upcoming projects. Details will be discussed in class and a handout for parents will be provided.
Our sewing projects will include creating a One of A Kind Clutch with Pom Pom or Tassle OR Travel Bag, creating your own Key Fob Pocket - heart shape OR rectangle shape, cut and sew a Lace or Leather Cuff and add finishing touches by incorporating embellishments, topstitching and hardware. We will also cut and sew a fun throw pillow. You'll make an Emoji or Pizza pillow. This is a bonus project if all the other sewing projects are complete. At the end of class, everyone will present their entire collection!
Students will need to bring the following materials to class:
Sewing tote or backpack
Pencils, Markers and/or other writing utensils of choice
Sketchbook of choice (lined paper is fine)
Double sided tape (optional)
Portable Sewing Machine (if possible)
