The best way to learn a second language is through imitation and repetition. The purpose of this program is to introduce the new language as if it were the native language. Therefore, classes are fully conducted in American Sign Language. Learning a new language should be a fun experience! That is why I have created a curriculum that engages students through music, movements, games and role play.
The objective of class is to learn basic conversational skill along with fingerspelling. We will also learn about deaf culture in collaboration with learning this beautiful language. A typical day in class would include welcome, our new lesson designed to build new vocabulary, a game or project and partner sign practice. Most importantly, I want students to have creative experiences. I want to motivate them to be lifelong learners, express their creativity, think critically, spread positivity, be well, and just plain have fun!
Research conducted by Dr. Marilyn Daniels, a professor of speech communication at Penn State University, has demonstrated that adding the visual and kinesthetic elements (American Sign Language) to verbal communication helped to enhance the vocabulary, spelling, and reading skills in the participating children. It is also a beautiful way to learn to express oneself, and to learn how to communicate within the deaf community.
