This semester we will cover the Presidents from Zachary Taylor, to William McKinley and the close of the first full American Century. The nation was at war with itself, new states were joining the union, people were flocking to California to discover gold, the first Trans Continental Railroad was built and every President made a mark on the events of this Great Age in American History.
A typical day will include a brief video from the PBS series 60-Second Presidents. After that, the students take turns reading from a handout. Then they will work in their interactive notebooks. These notebooks are really useful in compiling a lot of dates and information in a fun and interactive way. I like to reserve the last half hour for a fun game that doubles as review of all that we have covered. It is a great way to see if they were listening and retaining the information. And it makes learning fun!
This semester I have planned a project that will require some outside research. Each student will all be able to choose a character (a child from the Civil War Era) and journal about their experience growing up during such a tumultuous time. There are a few websites I will suggest they use to do their research. The project will require them to find images of artifacts from the computer and cut them out to bring to class. At the end of the semester, I would like to compile their artifacts and create a virtual museum with a room for each student.
In addition to the interactive notebook, the brief video and the fun project, we will also read from news clippings, stage a mock debate between Lincoln and Davis, study early drafts of the Gettysburg Address and --if we have time--watch a little Ken Burns Civil War Documentary.
