High School Student Leadership (AG)

Ages:  High School Students aged 14+

Homework:  YES.  There will be both reading and writing / journaling homework, along with time spent on planning an event or other service-learning activity.  At the end of each trimester, students will compile a digital Leadership Portfolio which will display their projects and assignments for the session. 

Student leadership is a project-based course aimed at increasing students' capabilities. Students will read about the different leadership styles and the nature of leadership. The curriculum also includes teacher-led lessons on topics such as the following, although many other skills will be practiced:

- goal-setting,

- communication,

- decision-making,

- leadership styles,

- organizational management.

This class has also been designed to incorporate SEL (Social Emotional Learning), the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy understanding about themselves, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. We have decided to incorporate SEL into our Student Leadership class at Huck because we wholeheartedly believe that these competencies are essential in order to cultivate leadership skills that embody the qualities of an effective leader.  


In Huck’s high school Student Leadership class, students will learn about different leadership styles and effective leaders throughout history, think and write critically about leadership practices, increase self-awareness, see leadership as a process of creating positive change and improve their ability to collaborate with others.  Leadership students will plan events for the Huck community and be required to research and participate in service learning opportunities. Students will be active participants in their learning and show a commitment to developing strong leadership qualities. At the end of each trimester, students will compile a digital Leadership Portfolio which will display their projects and assignments for the session. 


The course also aims to help students in the class become effective leaders. This includes mastery of core leadership skills like taking responsibility, being a role model, becoming aware of others, helping others achieve their own goals and more.


Students will also read about different leaders and leadership styles and write critically, reflectively, and persuasively from the planning of events, as well as practice the ability to speak about what is working and not working.
